A piece of history returns to the Monaro

2023-05-01T23:33:09+10:00

It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Councillor Lynda Summers to Cooma Railway Station this morning to return an important piece of railway history to the Monaro. Lynda was recently able to acquire the original Nimmitabel - Bombala Staff Box from a private collection and has generously loaned the box to Cooma Monaro Railway for display in our museum. The Staff Box, originally located in the Signal Box at Nimmitabel Railway Station, was an integral part of daily train operations for almost 100 years. Know as the "Staff and Ticket" procedure, the driver was required to obtain the metal [...]

New Merchendise

2023-05-01T23:29:18+10:00

Can't have a museum without merch. 🧢 It's only one week to go before we open our doors to the public on Sunday 11th December and we're busily putting the finish touches on the museum, including our lovely merchandise stand which is a throwback to the Railway Refreshment Room stands that sold everything from fresh fruit to tobacco and other items to train travellers. Make sure you grab some Cooma Monaro Railway merch when you visit the museum or if you can't wait till you visit the museum, all of our merch is also available in our online store: https://cooma-monaro-railway.square.site/ [...]

Sydney Morning Herald – Steam Trains vs Cyclists

2023-05-01T23:24:24+10:00

Interesting article from The Sydney Morning Herald about the future of railways and rail trails in NSW, although it is disappointing to hear claims that we are "threatening to derail" rail trail development, especially as we have been a part of this community for over 30 years and have already contributed many millions of dollars into the local economy over this time. We have always been fully supportive of the development of a rail trail in the Monaro under a shared model that realises the potential of both proposals and results in the best possible outcome for our region. We [...]

PROJECT UPDATE | Railway Institute Building

2023-05-01T23:17:50+10:00

It's been a couple of months since work commenced on the restoration of the Railway Institute Building and it's full steam ahead. Over the past two months, our volunteers have been busy preparing the exterior of the building for restoration, including: 🔹 Removal of the old timber sleeper retaining wall to be replaced with a 3m high concrete cast-sleeper retaining wall that will also create the footing for the visitor walking path. 🔹 Removal of the old tennis court fencing to be replaced with new poles and fencing. 🔹 Removal of the old pine awning that will be replaced with [...]

MUSEUM UPDATE | Telling the story…

2023-05-01T23:14:07+10:00

Today was a huge milestone in the development of the "Travel for Pleasure" museum at Cooma Railway Station with the installation of the first of many interpretation panels. These panels will grace the walls and display plinths in the museum, telling the story of railway travel in NSW. It's been a long time coming and they look absolutely amazing. We can't wait to open our doors and share this amazing work with everyone. We're currently finalising the last pieces in the exhibit and are looking forward to announcing our opening date very soon! New Visitor Courtyard

2023-05-01T23:07:32+10:00

As work continues in preparation for the museum opening, our volunteers have been transforming the areas around the station to ensure our visitors enjoy their visit. Over recent weeks, our team have been working on the southern end of the station, creating an outdoor refreshment area to allow visitors to sit and enjoy some light refreshments while visiting the museum. While there is still gardens to be planted in the coming weeks, we've been able to move the first tables in to place just in time for the September CMR Fresh Produce Markets tomorrow! [...]

NEW ARRIVALS | MBC Refrigeration Van & L-Truck

2023-05-01T23:00:38+10:00

It’s been a busy weekend at Cooma with two new arrivals to join our fleet of heritage freight rolling stock. Yesterday saw the arrival of timber refrigeration van MBC 22959 and an L-Truck. Due to height restrictions, the MBC had to be removed from its bogies for transport by road before being lifted back on to its bogies in Cooma yard by crane. Despite its appearance, MBC 22959 is in relatively good condition with minimal timber replacement required and restoration will commence shortly. Both items will be restored for display in the museum and will help tell the story of [...]

MUSEUM UPDATE | The countdown begins

2023-05-01T22:59:57+10:00

While there has been a lot of work happening around the yard, we've also been busy working on our museum and we're pleased to announce that we are now in the final stages of the museum fit out. Located in the beautifully restored parcel room at Cooma Railway Station, the "Travel for Pleasure" museum tells the story of how travel on the railways changed the lives of a generation and opened up the state. Today saw our team install two glass display cases that will take pride of place in the parcel room exhibit. 🙋‍♀️ As we approach the opening [...]

Track Restoration | Yard Update

2023-05-01T22:45:08+10:00

The equipment was putting up a fight this week but the first section of track restoration from the loco shed has been completed with the track re-gauged and new sleepers screwed into place. Work is now progressing south towards the turntable where old sleepers (or the hint of where sleepers might have been) have been removed and a combination of over 60 second-hand sleepers and recycled transoms have been placed on to the track, ready to be installed over the coming weeks. Having access to machinery has been a huge help in this process as we’re able to quickly move [...]
