Project – MBC22959

Work is continuing on the interior restoration of wagon MBC22959. Our volunteers have been applying the final coats of varnish to the interior walls of the wagon while the beautiful new floor has received it's first coat of Black Japan stain. Work will continue this week with another coat of Black Japan to be applied to floor before a final coat of varnish and the team can move on to painting the metalwork at the end of the wagon. With the exterior restoration complete, our volunteers have been focusing on the interior restoration of MBC22959 and it's looking amazing! We've been able to retain the patina of the side walls which have been cleaned and sanded, ready for oiling while the timber roof has been stripped, repaired and painted. The sheet metal at the ends which housed the ice blocks are slowly being cleaned and repaired, with small amounts of sheet metal being replaced to remove rust and replace missing parts. The weather was fighting us for a few months over Summer, but our volunteers have made some significant progress on the restoration of Refrigeration Van MBC22959 with the final colours now being applied to the exterior. To get to this point, our volunteers have completed a huge amount of work, including: 🔹 Replacement of missing and rotten timbers on the exterior of the van 🔹 Repair and replacement of damaged or rotten wall structure 🔹 Replace missing or failed screws on exterior timbers 🔹 Descaling of the steel under frame and bogies to remove rust and build-up of debris [...]

Over the past few months, our team have been working through the cleaning and preparation work for the restoration of our Timber Bodied Refrigerated Box Van MBC22959. Before visible repairs could be commenced, decades of dirt, grease and oil had to be removed from the body, along with areas of rotten and damaged external timbers. This allowed us to access the internal structure and replace sections of rotting support structure, as well as addressing areas of rust on internal plates and bolts.
