Project – Museum

Over the past 6 months, our volunteers have been working on another exciting project to install new historical interpretation signage around the Cooma Railway Precinct. This project will see the upgrade of existing signage, installation of additional way-finding signage around the precinct and extend the interpretation signage to items of rolling stock. What an amazing weekend. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support this weekend in celebrating the opening of the Cooma Monaro Railway Museum. We've had over 500 people through the museum over the weekend with people travelling from across the state to be here. It was great to see so many familiar faces and have the opportunity to reconnect with so many people who have played a part in the history of the railways in the Monaro. It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Councillor Lynda Summers to Cooma Railway Station this morning to return an important piece of railway history to the Monaro. Lynda was recently able to acquire the original Nimmitabel - Bombala Staff Box from a private collection and has generously loaned the box to Cooma Monaro Railway for display in our museum. The Staff Box, originally located in the Signal Box at Nimmitabel Railway Station, was an integral part of daily train operations for almost 100 years. Can't have a museum without merch. 🧢 It's only one week to go before we open our doors to the public on Sunday 11th December and we're busily putting the finish touches on the museum, including our lovely merchandise stand which is a throwback to the Railway Refreshment Room stands that sold everything from fresh fruit to tobacco and other items to train travellers. Today was a huge milestone in the development of the "Travel for Pleasure" museum at Cooma Railway Station with the installation of the first of many interpretation panels. These panels will grace the walls and display plinths in the museum, telling the story of railway travel in NSW. It's been a long time coming and they look absolutely amazing. We can't wait to open our doors and share this amazing work with everyone. We're currently finalising the last pieces in the exhibit and are looking forward to announcing our opening date very soon! While there has been a lot of work happening around the yard, we've also been busy working on our museum and we're pleased to announce that we are now in the final stages of the museum fit out. Located in the beautifully restored parcel room at Cooma Railway Station, the "Travel for Pleasure" museum tells the story of how travel on the railways changed the lives of a generation and opened up the state.
